What Are Amino Acids?

Proteins are the building blocks of life. Every single cell in the body contains protein.  All proteins are made up of amino acids. Every metabolic process requires amino acids to function. A couple of their most important tasks include nutrient transport and nutrient storage (i.e. water, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals). Amino Acids (AA) are classified into 3 groups:

  • Essential
  • Non-essential
  • Conditional

Essential AA’s cannot be made by the body and must be supplied through the diet. Non-essential AA’s are made by the body from the essential AA’s or in the normal breakdown of proteins. Conditional AA’s are needed in times of illness and stress primarily.

The Essential AA’s:

  • Histidine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Lysine
  • Methionine
  • Phenylalanine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Valine

The Non-Essential AA’s:

  • Alanine
  • Arginine
  • Asparagine
  • Aspartic Acid
  • Cysteine
  • Glutamic Acid
  • Glutamine
  • Glycine
  • Proline
  • Serine
  • Tyrosine

The Conditional AA’s:

  • Arginine
  • Cysteine
  • Glycine
  • Glutamine
  • Histidine
  • Proline
  • Serine
  • Tyrosine
