Methyl is a comprehensive formula designed to support optimal methylation (What is Methylation?) and helps maintain healthy homocysteine levels, a toxic by-product of the cardiovascular system.  It features five key nutrients that are involved in homocysteine metabolism: folate, trimethylglycine (TMG) and vitamines B12, B6 and B2.  These five nutrients, provided in active forms, support enhanced methylation and overall cardiovascular health.

Folic Acid (as calcium folinate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF))

This B vitamin has important roles in detoxification, nervous system function, breast tissue health, prenatal development and the conversion of homocysteine.  The combination of these forms of folic acid optimizes ultilizaton of folic acid as it bypasses many metabolic steps.  In fact, 5-MTHF is the form into which the body must convert all other forms of folic acid before it can be used.  What does this mean to you?  If you are having issues with methylating or even have a genetic fault that keeps your body from methylating, 5-MTHF is what your body needs to support the process of methylation.  Simple answer, 5-MTHF is a must for everyone to help facilitate the process of methylation.

5-MTHF/folic acid also acts by helping the body produce and maintain new cells.  In particular, red blood cell formation is dependent upon this vitamin.

Trimethylglycine (as anhydrous betaine)

TMG is found in several tissues of the body.  It offers an alternate pathway for homocysteine metabolism.  It has also been shown to help prevent against the activation of NF-kappaB, a major inflammatory marker in the body.  Other benefits of supplementing with TMG include but are not limited to increased protein synthesis (lean muscle growth), increased muscle strength and power, enhanced endurance and improved body composition.

Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin)

Cyanocobalamin (the form of B12 present in many supplements and nature) has to be converted in the liver to methylcobalamin, the form provided in methyl.  If your body is sturggling with the methylation process, this won’t happen and you won’t get the benefit of B12.  Research suggests it supports healthy homocysteine levels already within the normal range on its own and in combination with folate.

B12 is critical for keeping your red bloods cells and the cells of your nervous system healthy.  It aids in energy production, healthy digestion, can decrease in depression, stress and brain shrinkage, is essential for healthy hair, skin and nails, and is protective against cancers including breast, colon, lung and prostate.

Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5′-phosphate)

This coenzyme form of vitamin B6 is the primary bioactive form.  It is a coenzyme in approximately 100 different enzymatic reactions.  Data from the Framingham Study showed an inverse association between homocysteine and good B6 status (as well as B12 and folate).

B6 is necessary for optimal cardiovascular, digestive, muscular, nervous and immune system health.  It plays an important role in mood regulation and helps regulate your internal clock.

Vitamin B2 (as riboflavin 5′-phosphate)

As the principal coenzyme form of B2, riboflavin 5′-phosphate is used in many oxidative reactions.  Folate and riboflavin interact to support healthy homocysteine levels already within the normal range.

B2 is extremely important in energy production.  It aids in the processing of amino acids and fats and breaking down of carbohydrates.  It can also act as an antioxidant, aiding in tumor prevention and anti-aging.
